Stravaigin' In Sutherland - Carbisdale Caper

Ian Collinson, 8 May 2009

Folks

Twenty Five Cairn Ban'ers hit the haunted Castle that is the grand daddy of all Hostels - Carbisdale Castle near Ardgay.

Excellent weather on the Friday made for a most pleasant trip up the road with a variety of pitstops being made. For those who partook of a Curry at the Inverness Riverside restaurant they were even rewarded with a free dram from the owners - must have been our patter!

Saturday brought mixed weather - sun, hail, snow, rain, overcast, bright - you know the kinda thing - 4 seasons in one day. Well, actually it was more like 4 seasons every half hour.

Most of the party did Ben Hope on Saturday, Scotland’s northernmost Munro with about 10 in total doing Ben Klibrek on the same day - its quite a mental adjustment to get back out of the car after a half hour drive to start all over again. Still dependant on whether you timed getting a view correctly - the cliffs of Hoy on Orkney were visible from the tops.

I collected my first Horses A's nomination of the season - I'd been rabbiting on about a cycle I did 20 odd years ago from Carbisdale to the west coast that when everyone set off for Ben Hope in the morning I autopilotted my car to, well, Suilven actually. Nice roads mind but put us over an hour behind the rest which in turn lead to a rather late return and even later cook up! Dinner served at 11pm I think!

Sunday saw everyone jack lad and lassie head up Ben Wyviss with absolutely classic views to Skye, Nevis, Torridon, Far North, Wester Ross, Fannichs, Achnashhen, An Tealleach and Fisherfield - right place, right time, right weather! The path up Wyvis hasbeen upgraded to a part concrete stair-way which is hard going on the feet but certainly dry!

Sheena & Stu & Iain K decided on a terrific outing on Conival & Ben More Assynt with John & Campbell heading home after bagging Seana Braigh on the Friday as well.

All in all another Cairn Ban cracker with a very pleasant chilled out couple of evenings with the crew.

See you all next time folks!

Cheers

Ian
