Camp 'n' Climb on Beinn a'Bhuird

Alex Haken, 8 January 2006

Friday night walked into Slugain Lodge (2hrs). Small amount of snow lying on the paths. Very icy, temp minus 6 deg C. Had to hammer tent pegs into ground with ice hammer! Saturday was very misty so decided not to attempt anything too serious so went up Beinn a'Bhuird via a 150 m grade I snow gully. Full winter conditions - whiteout on top. Spent 20 mins searching for summit cairn with map, compass & GPS (Good practice if nothing else). Could not see 6 feet in front of us.

Temp dropped to minus 9 deg C at campsite overnight. Brrrrr...

Woke up Sunday morning to clear blue skies, and a dumping of fresh powder.

Went up into Coire nan Ciche. Large unstable cornices on the lee side of the corrie so opted for a 200m grade II/III climb on the north east face (have been told it is called Twisting Gully but not sure). Hard section on top through a very icy narrow crack onto summit. Brilliant day!!!! Brilliant weekend!!!

Cheers,

Alex.
